Me as a content creator??
If you would have asked me two years ago if I would like to make content for new campus leaders, it would have been a hard ‘NO”. I’ve never considered myself a person who would (or even could) create any type of content for any type of audience.
However, I have found something that I am really passionate about (at age 56) and think I’m pretty qualified to make a few comments on and actually enjoy the process. Those three variables have let me create content for a company out of El Paso called Responsive Learning.
This is not a commercial for them or for me. It’s just an honest blog post about finding a passion at age 56 that is giving me energy. I have been retired for almost five years now and it has been EXTREMELY uncomfortable. Awesome and uncomfortable (yes, both can be true at the same time).
I love my time to do whatever I want. Problem is, I’ve never had time to do whatever I want. I was in education for 30 years and a principal for 17. I’ve had commitments on the calendar from July 1st to June 31st for the last 30 years! I’ve had commitments for the next day for as long as I can remember, but now I don’t and it’s uncomfortable.
Therefore, having an opportunity to create content that I am passionate about at the pace I want to be committed is pretty damn awesome. I have created about 25 courses for Responsive Learning so far, most have been on topics that I chose. I have the process down and am efficient with my time so I can still travel, relax, work in the yard, etc. (all of which are still a little foreign to me as options) and make content.
To those of you who are retired or thinking about it, I highly recommend you consider creating some type of content to pass on to the next generation. It doesn’t even have to be in the world of education. I am getting a lot of energy from the experience, and it is bridging the gap between the life I used to have and the life I have, which is decreasing the uncomfortable part of retirement.
Find me if you need me,
John
